Detroit artists use city's blight as their canvas

DETROIT — Houses with dreary urban facades covered in polka dots. A traveling dollhouse made from the remnants of abandoned homes. A dilapidated residence covered in ice.

Artists across the Detroit area are using the city’s blight as their canvas, transforming abandoned homes into high-concept projects to draw attention to the homelessness, poverty and urban decay plaguing Detroit. They hope the ongoing experiment will shed some creatively inspired light on what Detroit was, is and could be again.

Her photography caught my eye in a friend’s hallway years ago. As I walked into the home this print was up on the wall and I stopped immediately marveling at the lighting. Her work was displayed on her myspace page along with her show schedule. A friend and I visited a show hung at a local tea house, this is an excerpt from my blog at the time expressing my delight:
"Saw Linda Costa’s photo prints at Urban Tea Party, I can’t stop gushing to everyone about how much I love love her work! Check out her page and you will know what I mean! Brilliant!!!!!!! Ohh and the raspberry roibles tea with honey soooooooooooooooooooo good! The décor even better!"
Hmmmm I wonder if Urban Tea party is still around? This is in ‘07 and I still love her work!
